Hello and welcome to another edition of That is Neat, Patrick. What follows is a collection of things Paddy found Neat this week.
Things I Like and Appreciate
Sometimes I run out of neat things to talk about as work gets busy and slip back into consumerism to get some quick serotonin. Half of the below items I own, and half I just like to look at online. None of these are ads or sponsorship but I am desperate willing to sell out for the right price.
New Balance 574
One of my New Years resolutions was to wear loafers 75% of the time. I was doing great on that until I bought a sensible pair of walking around shoes. As comfortable and well made as a pair of Weejuns are, there is nothing like a pair of New Balances with some comfort inserts. It’s no wonder everyone’s dad was wearing them back in the day. Now that dad core is in and New Balance is cool again, we can all enjoy the orthopaedic advantages.
Uniqlo Wide Pleated Pants
I have always had a tough relationship with pants. The slim fit trend of the 2010s nearly killed me. I am what some would kindly call “husky”, or, “a unit”. Slim fit pants might as well be painted on me. Even straight fit pants that are my waist size do not fit my legs (instead of therapy I do squats). Uniqlo wide fit pants have changed my life. They are actually wide as hell. There is nothing more demoralizing than buying “wide fit” pants from other brands that still chafe the leg hair off you. The geniuses at Uniqlo have made some truly wide pants that still manage to look good and fit well, and aren’t so baggy as to look sloppy. Pleats are just a bonus.
G.H. Bass Hampton Suede Boater
I don’t own these but my God am I tempted. They check all the boxes. G.H. Bass made slip on shoe with a lug sole? I’m already in. I’m a bit of a tool so you know I love boat shoes. Suede material that will get ruined by wet? On a shoe allegedly meant to be worn on a boat and/or dock? I love to live dangerously.
Casio AQ-800E-3A
This is nerd heritage. A Casio analog/digital hybrid on a bracelet is as haute couture as autism gets. I’m allowed to say that, I have an engineering degree.

Something to think about.
L’Etiquette
In anticipation of the next issue of L’Etiquette coming out and I change my personality again based of it’s contents, I am going through the back catalogue of issues. Unfortunately, English translations only recently became available, so I am having to rely on forgotten high school level French to get by. To say some outfits are out there is an understatement. As previously mentioned, I am what the kids call “a unit”, or, “thicc”. So when observing a cool outfit I have to keep in mind, is this actually nice, or are these garments just being worn by a 125lb when wet French man. The European mind cannot comprehend pants over the size of a US 32, which I last wore in elementary school. With that being said there are plenty of examples of big pants being worn. I am right about everything.

You can now buy me a coffee, or support this publication through paid subscriptions on Substack. For the time being, doing so does not get you any extra perks other than the joy of knowing you bought me a coffee. TNP is a creative outlet that I have less and less free time to work on. Despite thinking that anyone who would pay me for this incredibly mid content is crazy, any contributions to my coffee fund would be greatly appreciated.
